The Margarita: Queen of the Tequila Cocktails

Is there a cocktail that screams summer, sun, and good times more than the Margarita? This Mexican-inspired classic with tequila, lime, and an iconic salt rim has been one of the world's most popular cocktails since the 1930s. With Nomuss Margarita Mix, you can make a Margarita at home in less than a minute that rivals those from the best cocktail bars.

The Mysterious Origin

There are at least a dozen stories about who invented the Margarita, and no one knows exactly which one is true. Some say bartender Carlos 'Danny' Herrera created it in 1938 for a client who was allergic to all spirits except tequila. Others claim socialite Margarita Sames invented the cocktail in 1948 at a party at her villa in Acapulco. What is certain: the Margarita became wildly popular in the US in the 1950s and has never lost that status.

The Salt Rim: To Salt or Not to Salt?

The salt rim is the trademark of the Margarita, but it's not a must. A few options:

  • Full salt rim — The classic way. Moisten the rim with a lime wedge and dip in coarse sea salt.
  • Half salt rim — Dip only half of the glass. This way, your guests can choose whether to take each sip with or without salt.
  • Tajín rim — Replace the salt with Tajín (a Mexican spice blend of chili, lime, and salt) for a spicy twist.
  • No rim — Also perfectly fine. The cocktail is delicious enough on its own.

Popular Margarita Variations

  • Frozen Margarita — Blend everything with ice for a slushy version. Perfect for pool parties and summer gatherings.
  • Spicy Margarita — Add jalapeño slices to your shaker for a spicy kick that pairs surprisingly well with the citrus.
  • Mezcal Margarita — Replace tequila with mezcal for a smoky, more complex flavor profile.
  • Tommy's Margarita — Without triple sec, with agave syrup. Simpler and more tequila-forward.

Choosing the Right Tequila

Not all tequila is created equal. For the best Margarita:

  • 100% agave — Always choose a tequila made from 100% blue agave. Avoid 'mixto' tequila.
  • Blanco or Reposado — Blanco (unaged) gives a fresh, bright result. Reposado (briefly aged) adds warmth and vanilla notes.
  • Budget tip — You don't need an expensive bottle. A good, affordable 100% agave tequila like Olmeca Altos or Espolòn works excellently in a Margarita.
